Donald Wayne Gardner, born on June 13, 1942, in Erick, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in Owasso, Oklahoma. He was a cherished member of his community, known for his dedication as a social worker and for his love of the outdoors.
Donald spent many years serving as a social worker for the Department of Human Services in the state of Oklahoma, a role he held until his retirement in 1995. Prior to this, he utilized his education in business administration, obtained from Tulsa University, in a career involving systems analysis at Oklahoma Natural Gas. His professional journey reflected a commitment to helping others, both in his career and beyond.
Growing up in Erick, Oklahoma, Donald received his education at Erick High School, graduating in 1960. His life was marked not only by his professional accomplishments but also by his passions. Donald found great joy in hiking and spending time outdoors, immersing himself in nature whenever possible. An accomplished musician, he loved to play music and sing, sharing his talent with others. His service dog, Molly, who he trained himself, was a beloved companion, accompanying him on visits to nursing homes, schools, and libraries, where they brought joy and comfort to many.
He is survived by his children, Richard Todd Gardner and wife Tammie, Angela Dawn Running and husband Joseph, Michelle Denyse Hustmyre-Hernandez and husband Raul, Devin Michael Gardner, and Matthew Willis Gardner. He leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Willis Gardner and Robbie Estel Gardner; his son, Warren Scott Gardner; his great-granddaughter, Monica Pizana; and one sister. His legacy of kindness and service will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege to know him.
