Herbert "Herb" Forbes, a devoted community leader, loving family man, and cherished friend, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Skiatook, Oklahoma. Born on August 1, 1952, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Herb lived a life marked by dedicated service, both to his country and his community, as well as a deep love for his family and the outdoors.
Herb grew up in Barnsdall, where he received his education and graduated from Barnsdall High School in 1970. He furthered his studies at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. His commitment to service was evident early on through his time in the Army National Guard, exemplifying his steadfast dedication to his fellow citizens and his country.
Professionally, Herb was a versatile and hardworking individual. His career included roles as a purchasing agent for Helicomb International and Petrolite, as well as work for a trash hauling service. Notably, Herb served his community as the mayor of Skiatook and was a member of the Skiatook City Council for a total of sixteen years, contributing significantly to the town's growth and governance.
Herb married the love of his life, Janelle A. (Delk) Bedsworth, on December 31, 1990, in Skiatook. Together, they built a nurturing and close-knit family. Herb is survived by his wife, Janelle Forbes; their children, Nicole Grunden and her husband Eric, Jayme Lakey and her husband Aaron, Jeremy Bedsworth, and Kelly Forbes and Chris Culver; and a loving extended family that includes his brother Everett Forbes, sister Evelyn Rose Green, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Forbes and Vera June (Phelps) Crain.
Beyond his professional and public service, Herb found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished spending time at the lake, fishing, and camping. His love for the outdoors extended to piddling, gardening, and yard work, activities through which he found peace and connection to nature. Herb was also an avid supporter of his grandchildren’s athletic pursuits, often seen cheering them on at their sporting events and lovingly capturing their moments on film.
Herb’s warmth, dedication, and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, family devotion, and community involvement.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Herb’s life at Sien - Shelton Funeral Home, located at 1000 S Lombard Lane in Skiatook, Oklahoma. Visitation will be held on May 8, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a visitation with family from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at First Baptist Church West Rogers Campus, 825 West Rogers Boulevard, Skiatook, Oklahoma, on May 9, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM.
Herb Forbes will be remembered as a pillar of his community, a loving husband and father, and a guiding light to his family and friends. His legacy of service and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know him.
