James Leon Gourd, a beloved figure whose life was punctuated by dedication to family and community, passed away on March 9, 2026, in Skiatook, Oklahoma, at the age of 83. Born on May 21, 1942, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, James grew up in Tulsa, where he received his education and graduated from Central High School in 1960.
James served his country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1966. After his military service, he pursued a career in upholstery, lending his skilled hands to Oklahoma Upholstery for many years. His craftsmanship was appreciated by many, reflecting a commitment to quality and service.
On August 6, 1975, James married his loving wife, Minnie Lou Root, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The couple made their home in Tulsa before moving to Skiatook in 2009. Their life together was marked by love and companionship, enriching the lives of those around them.
In addition to his devotion to family and career, James enjoyed a range of hobbies that brought him joy. He was an avid golfer and bowler, finding pleasure in both sports, and he cherished the moments spent fishing and traveling with loved ones. These interests were a testament to his zest for life and his enjoyment of the outdoors.
James leaves behind a cherished family, including his daughter, Dana Gourd-Gillean and her husband, Jeremy Burnes. His legacy continues through his granddaughter, Ashley Glover, and her husband, Justin, as well as his great-grandchildren, Jayzen, Jayley, and Jaynik. He is also survived by his brother, Eddie Gourd, and his wife, Glenda and several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Tandy Gourd and Emma Lee (Downing) Gourd, as well as his wife, Minnie Lou (Root) Gourd. He has been reunited with his siblings Henry, Judy, Tandy Jr., Johnny, Louise, Mike, and Eugene, along with his beloved Aunt Anna Bell.
The memory of James Leon Gourd will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his kind spirit, indomitable work ethic, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His life was a tapestry of experiences and relationships that illustrated the importance of family, community, and the simple joys of life.
